Basically it can scan a small area (either by flying, or some weird magic Pokemon sense) and then display it. Maybe if the area is very warm, it changes type or can use Fire moves. It's like Castform, but location-based instead of weather-based.
The globe evolution displays the whole region, and its innards are similar to the inside of the earth. It can still change type depending on the location, and now it can also change type based on Terrain.
