There was a page in Pokemon Adventures where Red has his Pokeballs opening mechanisms broken by Giovanni's Dugtrio and can't use them for the remainder of the battle, kinda reminds me of that.
Gen 1 had Cubone's dead mother because of Team Rocket, the anime had multiple fire starters abused, neglected, and left for dead by dickhead trainers not even on an evil team, just did it for the love of the game I guess.
