I love Golbat and Crobat, but it feels weird going off of Zubat, an eyeless bat that permanently lives in caves. What's with Game Freak and EYES, man?
Eyes are an important indicator, and that's not so much an artistic design thing so much as it is a "HARDWIRED INTO OUR BRAINS THANKS TO NATURE" thing. Why do you think so many animals out there have eyespots and/or have various body patterns and colorations to hide their eyes? Eyes tell animals where an animal's head is, and knowing where another animal's head is is super important to animals for obvious reasons. As such, it's glued right into our brains that anything without eyes that should have eyes is automatically unsettling or "not right", and those make for the coolest Pokemon! Why do you think a good number of the Ultra Beasts purposely lack eyes? It makes them more alien!
Look at pic related. Notice how its real eye is hidden by the stripe, and how it has that super conspicuous fake eyespot to fool predators into thinking that its head is where that eyespot is because it's way better to lose a fin than your head? Eyes, yo. It's not merely a design thing.
Still, I'm not saying that all Pokemon should just not have eyes forever. I'd just like to see more eyeless Pokemon more often, that's all.
