That's probably my favorite memory of exploration in pokemon. Maybe there was some npc that mentions it, but we found it completely by chance and it was magical.
The hidden grotto's in BW2 evoked a similar feeling, as did volcarona's temple in BW.
Honestly I think there is less mystery now, but certainly the internet has reduced that too.
