The DSM-V for example is a modern guideline, but even just a few editions back homosexuality was formally considered mental illness under the same umbrella as scat and floor tiles, regardless of anyone's opinions on the matter then or now. The subsequent update regarded it as a "necessary" function in regard to one's lifestyle and self-perception, not unlike what we see today with more significant examples who utilize it for the sake of inadequacy and dysphoria of morphology.
