Game Freak has made way worse changes to the game, and people still complained about the most irrelevant. As someone that has transferred and used at least a dozen Pokémon from gen 3 all the way to gen 7, I never really felt like I ever benefitted from the system. Doesn't mean I wanted them to throw it away, but they pretty much treated it like it was a throwaway gimmick anyway. Just look at how much they charge for HOME.
