I haven't watched the anime since the orange islands, but I'd acknowledge its repetitiveness and redundancy but XY does have a change of pace and animation is nicer. Not only that but part of the appeal of the anime is the fact they don't follow the rules exactly as in the games. So in a way XY just resparked my interest.
Also it really depends who you ask too because there is even more autism like people who watch the anime only for the girls.
