He goes off on his own firstly because he was excluded so fuck you two and secondly because both you and Carmine don't actually care about clearing her name, you just want to go off on some mask adventure while the pokemon he loves is vilified.
Really though, MC never did anything wrong on his adventure, and Kieran never really did anything wrong in his own pursuit. You can't fault him for trying to prove himself when as a 12yo he has to watch someone else walk off into the sunset with his favorite pokemon. That's what makes it a compelling tragedy, an honest, maybe naïve boy gets wrung out by fate and the result is him deeply changing, warping into a man (kid) that has nothing left except excorcising his own weakness.
