But the player characters have literally zero reason to do that. Pokemon may not be realistic but it follows its own rules. Do you see other kids from the starting town like the rival for example, or other trainers in general that challenge the Gyms to travel barefoot? You don't.
The only one who could maybe travel barefoot is Chicken and that's because she's in fucking Alola. But even then, she would have to convince Lillie to go barefoot too haha. Even traveling in sandals is far-fetched for most player characters.
