Every other time it's used in the story (either in Ning's dialogue or narration from his third pov perspective?), it's used as best friend. But 闺蜜 is a bit more involved than that, being a gendered term, of a woman's best woman friend.
If I were to go back and re-translate this, I'd probably have to think about it some more, because while something like say... 'gal pal' is more precise... it's also waya anachronistic.
Anyway, because of how it's Shen saying it, going with a less formal, more lingo-esque word felt appropriate...
