The doll is meant to represent a story about him meditating with his eyes open until his arms and legs fell off. The idea of adding an eye to the doll when you start something and then another to the doll when you finish is popular in Japan as a show for starting and ending a hard task. Like 10 years of meditation into inner peace and understanding.
