I have defeated the Fire Trial after doing a full team rehaul. Duxor the Psyduck did her part by beating up the first Marowak and Hiker before the Totem showed up.

Magdelena steals Marowak's Thick Club and then takes a chunk from a Flame Burst + Flame Wheel combo.
Gee the Herdier switches in and lowers the foes' Attack with Intimidate ability before taking a heavy hit from Salazzle's Flame Burst; Marowak detects again.
I pivot to Kitalia the Mantine, who takes only a little bit of damage from Marowak's Brick Break and poisoning from Salazzle's Poison Gas.
Kitalia is brought to 6 HP by Venoshock and a critcal hit Hex; the poison damage would be too much for Kitalia to handle.
With her last breath, Kitalia drags Marowak down to the depths with a Z-Powered Hydro Vortex, the Totem's Cursed Body ability disabling the Z-move as some kind of cruel joke.

>>54369026Dang, that's rough. Losing two pokemon to moves that lock you in. I had a similar thing happen in a Yellow run; my Nidoking got into a thrash-off with Erika's Gloom and got outmatched.
Given how non-threatening most of the pokemon are in Gen 1, I would be inclined to just grind up Growlithe to 50. The downside is that grinding sucks.
