Fuck I mean Brendan/May and Bianca were friendly but they could still fuck you up and actually had a personality, or a purpose in the story beyond holding your hand and sucking your dick.
XY's Rival is "yeah my parents are totally elite Pokémon trainers so you know I'm the strong one, now battle my cat shitmon and like two others, oh gosh golly gee I lost again looks like you're just too good for an elite trainer like me neighbor"
I'd take Shauna and Hau-types any day over a half-assed "serious" rival. Shauna wasn't strong but at least she was doing her own thing instead of being completely defined by you from the start.
