There's been an obvious effort since BW to make the human characters more interesting and it's clearly working because the "flop" mobage you're referring to has well over 50 million downloads and still seems to be going pretty strong. They're capitalizing on husbandofags and waifufags and they're making bank because of it. The GOTCHA! music video made Twitter explode when it came out for a reason.
