You can complain about Voltorb all you want, but at least it's extremely well designed in that you immediately comprehend what the Pokemon is trying to be from the first 5 seconds of looking at it. "A Mimic but for Pokeballs", "A turtle with water cannons", "Giant swamp frog", all of these designs are brutally honest, in that they're designed specifically so their themes are immediately understood.
If I see a Pokemon that's literally just a Diglett, but you're dumping on me a book on why it's actually not a Diglett, I'm not going to care. Design-wise, it's a Diglett.
