>>38330324A story can be made tho, his dream is to be a Pokémon Master (whatever that is) so Ash being more powerful than his Mons can be something he has to work around, like, maybe he's only good at punching things but that doesn't mean he goes around getting into fights when he just wants to be recognized as The Pokémon Master and not that kid that can kill almost everything in his path.
