Smogon in itself isn't the problem. I mean, it's actually pretty harmless- a website that talks about Pokemon, tries to suggest strategies, and tries to keep things organized by tiers so that people can keep things balanced.
HOWEVER, the problem lies with people who take Smogon as law. People who get anal about trying to breed the right Pokemon with the right moves according to Smogon without really putting any...uh ( Personality? Effort? ) into it.
It's like- if you're just going to follow Smogon to the letter, people aren't experimenting or being creative and relying on proven combinations to win every match- without having done anything but look up their Pokemon on smogon.
