but as far as tone, theme, atmosphere, art direction... the series took a hit as soon as gen 2(and that's if you ignore Yellow)
understandably from a business standpoint, of course you're gonna need to do a lot of adjustment, concessions and standardization when you go from bringing to life a passion project with a flawed but fully realized vision into spearheading a massive multimedia cashcow franchise that calls for neverending expansion to provide an endless stream of sellable products
but yeah, there's still good value to appreciate about each of the first 5 gens, even if it brings down the original universe each time. starting from gen 6 it's simply not even worth checking out and it could even be argued it's borderline unethical to support the further bastardization of the legacy of Pocket Monsters Red and Green
