I personally feel they work best if played as a natural outgrowth of a position that once upon a time used to effectively be that of a militia leader. Someone who would be tough enough to spearhead a fight in times of trouble, but still have the time and expectation to help buff up local trainers.

Hilariously enough, I actually based the premise of "developers meeting up in a tropical island on a project" off of the story of how FFIX was developed in Hawaii... And then 2 years later we got an honest-to-goodness region based off of Hawaii.
Maybe that's my cue to write a sequel set in Alola sometime. Maybe chronicling something like (Not) Gamefreak's struggle in finally implementing competent netcode.
