People here forget that mint means literally factory fresh, bit that pokemon cards are mass produced and thus can be pack fresh damaged. So someone pulling a card straight from a pack with edgewear on it or some silvering does not make it light play because that's not possible. So NEAR mint and GEM mint were established to account for these variances in factory defects. Guess what, that card that gets a 10 surface, 10 centering, 9 edges, and 7 corners is still a near mint card. That card that gets 10 centering, 10 edges, 9 corners, and 7 surface is still a nm card. Figure it out
