If there was any time to replace him it's not. I mean, what more can they do with him? If the writers don't allow Ash to win the league in XY(Z), when he's at his best BY FAR, there's literally no point in following him because he will never succeed in his goal. As far as romance goes, what they're doing with Serena is unprecedented(maybe a bit extreme of a term), but with he amount of pushing they're doing with this Ash/Serena thing, if it were any other anime...it be endgame. But, if that doesn't come to pass either we may as well give up on Ash every getting any major development.
I like Ash as a character, but he's one of the most unsuccessful main characters I've ever seen in any anime.
