I unironically think he's better then XY Ash. He feels like a blend of OS Ashs personality and comedy and his DP/XY self in terms of strength and maturity and it works really well together.
People really hate on the artstyle but it actually works so well for Pokemon. Everything SM Ash does I can't even begin to imagine XY Ash doing because it's so out there but every other Ash I can see him doing these things. XY did away with a generational tradition of having Ash crossdress which for a lot of people was very disappointing but it made sense given his personality at the time and with how "cool" Ash was portrayed in XY having him crossdress didn't really fit so it was handed to Serena instead. But with SM this Ash can do everything from comedy, seriousness, hotblooded shounen, to depressed. People complain about the "meme faces" but they've really toned it down since the series began.
I have to say the first 10 episodes really didn't showcase what SM was all about properly as the show is so much more different then how it began at this point. I feel sorry for all those who got turned off by the artstyle and choices the series made since SM really does have a lot of heart and fun put into it.
