I would like to point out that the magazine page does not actually imply that the past form of Volcarona didn't exist. It only disproves the theory that the Slither Wing spotted in the present was revived from fossils (which we already knew, since it came from the time machine).
I say this as someone who thinks the imagination theory is a fun concept. The Volcarona thing isn't actually good evidence for it.
