There are several large tree stumps larger than the inner trees scattered all over the forest implying that there are taller and thicker trees that creates the shade. Or perhaps its a cross-section view so that the larger trees don't obstruct the viewers player. In Eterna Forest there is none of that that suggest that it is trees.
