He's kind of like Ash in the sense that he very much has a personality like that of a shounen main character. The way I saw it when I was playing the game, it felt like he was the "special main character guy". I mean, he's the champion's brother and you're just some kid. That really sets him up for greatness already and his card says that people thought he had the potential to be the best.
With all that in mind, it felt like I was the "rival" instead but Hop never felt like a "rival" but more like a best friend pushing you to do your best. Someone you've known for a long while and never leaves you behind. Plenty of people think he's annoying as shit, I'm sure. But I liked him for the good I saw in him and I would imagine that anyone who ships themselves with Hop likely feels the same.
Also you can customize your trainer, choose your team, name yourself, you might as well go all out and draw yourself marrying Hop or Marnie or whatever.
