Pokémon has a ton of potential for amazing storylines, it's literally the modern day world but monster battles are commonplace! It's such an original and untapped concept in media, yet Game Freak hasn't been able to tell a good story with it in 25 years (Black and White are decent)
Just hire a good writer for once and stop listening to nerds who want games to stay the same for years.

XY had the potential to be great. AZ story was the only time I felt invested in XY shitty plot, and I wanted to learn more about the great war, and Lysandre's connection to AZ. Xerneas and Yveltal also have some pretty cool story ideas. Could have been like a better Lugia and Ho-oh with their connection, plus the theories of the legend trio mirroring the Yggdrasil tree was cool as shit. But they never go in depth enough with it.
