Sycophantic friends are boring. Which is why I liked Kiawe, who didn't trust this "instantly loved by everybody" guy at the drop of a hat. Despite that, I liked Clemont too, probably because Ash himself was interested in Clemon'ts science and stuff.
With Iris, the issue was a lack of response from Ash. This is the guy who's never been afraid to argue with girls, Misty, May or Dawn. But in BW he was getting kodomone'd hard and never even responded. OS Ash or Brock would be roasting her in return.
