They told stories of the "Mist Stones" which let you evolve certain Pokemon an additional stage- Mewtwo to Mewthree, Charizard to Charcoal, Blastoise to Rainer, so on and so forth. These so called "PokeGods" were the subject of much speculation.
Now as I understand it this kind of rumor mill was dead by gen 4, and that's when the average /vp/ poster- or at least the /vp/ poster with a lot of time on their hands- got into the series. But for those of us who were here from the start, Megas are essentially a realization of an ancient prophecy we had all but forgotten. It's a level of kino that I hope you'll be able to understand at some point in your life.
