This is correct.
Gen 1: Ok games at the time. There were better GB/GBC games out there. The link cable stuff was revolutionary. Yellow was shit though, is more empty and soulless than R/B despite the updated sprites and having Pikachu follow you around.
Gen 2: Objectively an upgrade. Introduced new mechanics (time, night/day, eggs), a new region, tied into the old region, updated everything. Crystal took it a step further with new added gameplay. The new Pokemon were eh but the game itself was better in every way.
Gen 3: Made the GBA huge. Added so many things. Had some worrying signs (took away day/night) but added so much outside shit to do and had a massive postgame. FR/LG were nostalgia cashgrabs, nothing meaningful, just an excuse to play updated gen 1. Emerald was the peak.
Gen 4: Good games. DS was kind of a shitty handheld and it reflected in the game quality. Horribly slow. Platinum fixed the issues and HS/SS proved that Gen 2 was really good. Not bad overall, but the linear improvement we saw from gen 1 - 2 - 3 slows down here.
Gen 5: Again, good not great. Added some neat things, took away other things. Starting to wonder why the games aren't improving more.
Gen 6: What is going on? Are we really just resorting to gimmicks now instead of actually trying to make the game better?
Gen 7, 8, and 9: My phone has better quality games. My fucking phone. My phone has free games with better art, graphics, mechanics, and gameplay. There's no way people are still paying $60 for this, right? $60 for a turn-based game with Gamecube-tier graphics? Surely consumers aren't that silly.
