If you really want to reach for some sort of deeper interpretation, "Higan" is a Buddhist expression referring to enlightenment that literally translates as "the other shore/side", where the dead at the Sanzu River can cross from the shore of suffering (i.e. our world) to the shore of Enlightenment.
On the other hand, it's just as likely it was chosen because Higanbana are associated with death and therefore are edgy as fuck.
