my headcanon is that they were meant to be an evo like pancham, where you needed Venonat in the same team with Caterpíe for him to evolve into metapod because of something like in nature Venonats being bros that make cocoons for caterpies and that's why they later evolve into butterflies with venonat eyes. Metapod then returns the favor and Venonat evolves into a moth with metapod non-lazy eyes.
