They're also picking up that the series doesn't make distinctions, psychic types are any special compared to other types. The important thing to note that even those that think of Pokémon that way can still easily pick up on the pet/critter aspects.
And as I said we know they're deliberate because The Pokémon Company straight up said Pokémon replace real animals, as in they take over that space and concept, Tajiri in his biography reinforcing the domesticated animal aspect and Takeshi Shudo explicitly stating that it was a decision to write Pokémon as animals in the real world. Discussions like that show people are keen to pick up on context clues and shows even those skeptical are aware of the way the series constructs Pokémon.
And here, for example, is people comparing Pokémon to real pets and animals, which based off our sound is what the people running the series want people to think of Pokémon as. This is why the Yokai comparisons don't work and even monster comparisons because Pokémon is more open in it's rejection of the monster label meanwhile you have The Pokémon Company openly stating Pokémon take the place of real animals.
