From day 1 until the very end, he was almost entirely motivated by 2 pursuits, his main pursuit of being the very best, and his secondary pursuit of being a hero for the people and Pokemon around him. It was only at the very end, when the day has been permanently saved, his goal of being the greatest battler ever achieved, that he introspects really hard and realizes he needs to find something beyond that. This is a realization that can *only* come from after he's forced to confront the question "what do I do next?". If you intend to adapt Ash into an AU, you need to abide by this. Ash must be motivated by a goal to become the very best and impossible to be taken off by goal by anything but *succeeding*
