Since I don't really see the protagonists of each games as their own characters, as much as they are just self-inserts for me, I always just imagine them at my age. So as a kid that didn't really change the story, but in college I imagined that when the mom said "well I guess kids always have to leave their mothers some day" I always imagined her saying it facetiously, like she really meant "about fucking time". Now that I'm married and have a kid I just think of the mom character as my wife since I refer to her as "mom" anyways. This only really worked for Gens 1, 2, 4, and 5 though since in Gen III your dad is actually a character and since 3D the kids and adults have different character models, but its more of a back-of-my-headcanon than a thought out lore or anything.
