He knew that if Steven dodged that he would take the opening the Z-move seemingly left to strike Pika and get careless, leaving the M Gross open for an unexpected and unpredictable redirect of the Z-move.
In summation Ash cleverly utilized his past training and powerful moves to counter a predicting machine with something no one would be able to predict. Seems pretty legit to me, or did you just not get it?
