To put it frankly, the Ultra Beasts are definitely real, and aren’t acting. However, they’re being exploited. The Resort Executives looked through the files of Mohn’s research and Interpol to catalogue each kind of Ultra Beast and find which one would be the most benign to introduce as a big plot. They obviously chose Nihilego, as it’s the cutest and least intimidating of the beasts, as well as being slow enough to contain (unlike Phero) and weak enough to not cause any actual damage (unlike Kartana) Lusamine dressed herself and her daughter up in costume to look like Ultra Beasts as foreshadowing to the audience, and uses an Ultra Portal to summon a Nihilego to the region with our hero as the one to make First Contact, because our hero accomplishes everything by just being there. However, things go south fast for them. When transporting herself to Ultra Space to set up the final battle, Lusamine underestimated the power of multiple Nihilegos working together and turned into… whatever the fuck she turned into. At that moment, Lusamine was not acting. She was just really, really high. This is the singular moment that the Hero actually accomplishes something that isn’t part of the script. And of course, Lillie, Hau and Gladion do their best to improv, which is possible since all they’ve been doing thus far is pretending to be surprised alongside the Hero. Lusamine and Lillie leave in the end to hide the lingering effects on Lusa’s now broken body and psyche.
