The jump to 3D cemented the shift in the franchises direction.
DPPT did plenty of things wrong they still felt like the creators were making a effort and trying somewhat to adhere to the feel of the older games.
BW took a large focus on characters and narrative and while I find it mostly detrimental to the game it still is overall a fun experience.
XY is the first game I can't say that about, and ORAS is a straight downgrade. There is good stuff the games do, but it isn't enough to be worth playing. Pokemon games have been on a steady downward slope and if you are still here for the games and not the creatures you are doing it wrong.
