I've been playing since '98 with Red, Blue, and Yellow, so I'd consider myself a geewunner. However, I have to admit that from a design standpoint, the Pokemon themselves have been getting better and better each gen. I'd say Gen 3 had the biggest artistic shock because Gen 1 and 2 both had simplistic designs, but it was Gen 3 that really started out the whole complex and interesting design choices. Four improved upon Gen 3's designs and Gen 5 just really blew them all out the water. Pretty much every pokemon from Gen 5 looks cool. I really like Gen 6's Pokemon as well, but some of the Mega Evolutions just look like the artists went a tad overboard. I will say this is the first gen where I've been genuinely impressed with ALL THREE starting pokemon.
