From what I could tell Yveltal wanted to prove that he could "give/preserve" life instead of taking it, (Either out of love or really close friendship). He does this infront of Xerneas as she is in her dormant state, she then awakens to find him not only accomplishing his goal but excelling at it. She then restores his life and he "loves" her for it.
In all honestly I have no idea what the genders are but I'm going with Male Yveltal and Female Xerneas solely because of how they are portrayed throughout the rest of his works.
Its very good...kinda saddening though.
