Likw most of thw other anons have repliwd with, I've always loved animals, especially mythical ones (one of my favorite animals is a dragon). I like the idea with building relationships with them too, because of this HGSS is my favorite game partially because of the following mechanic. Sometimes I'll imagine when both my pokemon and my enemy are on a slither of health that I'll be cheering them on and giving ir all they got and through will and caring for me my pokemon will lay a final blow.
