They basically just wanted a reason for Lana to leave Mallow, too, so Mallow'd be left alone at the end of SM to further portray her in her more realistic role as the teenager whose life is slaving away at the family business, and then never bothered to explain things when they needed Lana back for the Alola episode. Like, c'mon, you're telling me they couldn't have had a throwaway scene of Lana showing the Manaphy print? Not even a still-shot as part of a slideshow?
