People will actually buy something if the setting actually differs from Pokemon. See Yokai Watch, it already has a style similar to Pokemon but with vastly different setting/context where you befriend ghostly beings with supernatural powers.
Hell, if you just made Pokemon but only with bug pokemon and slap on a original name for it. People would buy it because it sells itself as THE bug catching/taming game, providing a unique niche, just like Yokai Watch's ghost niche.
