People who play D&D make and role-play as characters of the opposite sex all the time, and nobody thinks it's weird unless the player him/herself is being weird about it. It would be an equally ridiculous assertion to say that playing as a character of a different species will give you a transformation fetish or something. And if you're already on board with making a Pokémon character, then clearly you're not worried about that.
