Why would they do a Serena special at all? She's gone, we aren't going to see her for a long long time and that's good. We don't need to see her progressing, see her adventures - yeah it may be neat to see but its not needed - because we know she's going to be fine. But even more so because Serena's return, whenever it happens, is going to be a big fucking event. It's going to be miles bigger then Misty, May and Dawns cameos because of the implications of Serenas return and her relationship with Ash.
Serena returning would draw a massive audience because they'll want to see how she's changed and what she does in regards to Ash. She might have a new outfit, hairstyle, she'll have developed as a coordinator and battler and more importantly every shipperfag in the universe will tune in to watch Ash and her reunite. The impact of her return diminishes if we see her adventures in Hoenn because we'll get a look at everything we would learn about upon her return.
