You literally said that "surfboard" press a to surf kind of thing" was boring, but you also say secret techniques are fine when the secret technique to surf IS A SURFBOARD.
Moreover in both instances, you Pokémon is not actually being taught a battle move. The "secret techniques" are not moves. They are called "moves" but functionally they are not moves in the way HMs are moves. Thus they are functionally more similar to items that fill the role of HMs, which are also not moves. Is this really that hard to understand?
