It was one of those many evo ideas that floated about back in the late oughts, early 2010s. It was neat, even if it wasn't always thought through, there was at least a greater willingness to experiment and think outside the box before said box before more solidified with the advents of thinks like Mega Evolution and those other concepts. Honestly, if I were to go with a "temporary" evolution, I think I would have gone for a side grade, a type shifting in battle perhaps that would allow for a shift to a secondary typing on the fly, or just a different primary one.
