If the option doesn't appeal to them, they just won't vote for it. (unless they specifically vote for it to make people mad, which many people actually did in Charizard's favor, btw)
Another thing to consider is that, since this is a "Vote for your absolute favorite" poll, then Categories and Generations are literally meaningless. The only thing that matters is the OPTIONS. Regardless of the gen, if Charizard, Mewtwo, Mimikyu, Greninja, etc. was someone's FAVORITE, they would vote for it. That's all there is to it. If your favorite is Charizard, you will vote for it. The existence of Pikachu, Eevee etc. doesn't mean shit because you're voting for your favorite pokemon, and that Pokemon is Charizard. Like other Pokemon BESIDES Charizard? Cool, now you either have the OPTION to vote for other of your favorites from other gens; Use one of the remaining days to vote for another Gen 1 pokemon you might like (or for your favorite again, if you like it that much); or even not vote for anything else now that your favorite is voted for. EVERYONE had the same opportunities to do so. If your favorites are Mimikyu and Pikachu and you vote for them, you ARE NOT "stealing" votes from Charizard or any others. They are simply NOT your favorites and you wouldn't have voted for them anyways. No one was OBLIGATED to vote for Mimikyu, Charizard or Greninja, but the people that had any of them as favorites voted for them regardless. Why? BECAUSE THEY'RE THEIR FUCKIN' FAVORITE POKEMON AND THAT'S WHAT THE GODDAMN POLL WAS ABOUT!
