>>57026705To an extent I agree. I don't really have an upper limit on the amount of difficulty to overcome an obstacle that I enjoy if it's well enough designed. My issue is most of the methods these "designers" use to create challenge is exceptionally uninspired and is based around the premise that the player will have both the best possible team for any given fight as well as the best possible RNG for any given fight via infinite repetitions until they win. This creates fights that, no matter how obtuse finding the "winning line" through them is, is ultimately still a trial and error exercise with unlimited resources (on a macro scale, being both attempts and access to all the previous pokemon the game has given you access to thus far) given enough time. The game fundamentally assumes your time isn't valuable and doesn't actually test other skills than preparation, no matter how input read-y the AI is because it still (largely) follows the same path in any situation with minimal variance leaving improvisation and on-the-fly adaptation entirely out of the game. Edge of Eternity was really onto to something by making the Sageniggers have a pool of 8 or so possible mons and randomize which ones and the order they appear in on each attempt. A combination of that and an AI that sometimes chooses the 2nd best option in any given situation (provided the variance between the best and 2nd best is within a certain delta) would also go a long way to make fights less trial-and-error scriptfests. Clover's AI is, as far as memory goes, still the shining paragon of what the AI in a "hard pokemon game" should or shouldn't be doing.
