Yes, especially the sounds. There are so many mean sounding attacks like Thunderbolt/Thunder, Surf, Blizzard, Tri-Attack, ect..that they completely gutted in newer gens as time went on.

I like all gens of Pokemon, but I also find that gen 1 Pokemon generally have more "realistic" proportions according to the animal they're based on. e.g. gen 1 Pikachu's design was more round and it looked like an actual mouse, but now they always make its head look separate from its body. Also compare Vulpix with say, Zorua or Fennekin.
