Anyways, the gas on fumighast would actually either be volumetetirc, or solid and opaque.
Volumetric stuff is another beast entirely. On one hand it's easier to do on a base level since it's something you can do on a material basis, instead of a whole system of particles, but on another hand if you REALLY want it to look good it requires a lot more tweaking, vs. once you get a particle system looking good, you are more or less on the right track, in my experience.
You could also go the route of simulating a volumetric space with a particle system, but then you are getting into really fucking complex simulations that take days to weeks to render.
I'm no expert, of course, so I might and very well am wrong about some of that
